Former House Speaker T.W. Shannon says his record of bringing people together on important issues is what sets him apart as a candidate to fill the last two years of Sen. Tom Coburn’s term.
Shannon and U.S. Rep. James Lankford are the two leading candidates in the June 24 Republican primary. Former state Sen. Randy Brogdon and four political novices on the ballot are drawing less than 10 percent combined.
“The biggest challenge we have right now economically in Washington is probably (U.S. Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid,” Shannon said in a meeting Tuesday with The Oklahoman’s editorial board. “I think having control of the Senate for the Republican side would be the greatest boost to our economy. But even once you get there, like we did in Oklahoma, even when you have a majority to govern there’s the infighting that happens that you have to manage.
“I think I have a great record frankly of dealing with that, bringing people together from all factions of life.”
