Federal officials have notified Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John Doak that they are taking over large parts of health insurance regulation in the state to ensure state rules comply with the Affordable Care Act.
Federal law does not require states to enforce the requirements under the Affordable Care Act, but it does require the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to enforce the law’s protection if the state does not, a March 15 letter from CMS Deputy Administrator and Director Gary Cohen to Doak says.
Health insurance companies doing business in Oklahoma are receiving letters from CMS that enforcement of the law’s requirements will be handled by the federal agency.
Politico reports that officials in Missouri, Texas and Wyoming received similar letters.
