OKLAHOMA CITY – The books are closed for the year – the law books, that is.
With Gov. Mary Fallin’s veto of Senate Bill 954 on Thursday, the fate of the final pending piece of 2013 Oklahoma legislation was determined.
Using records from the secretary of state, Legislature and Governor’s Office, the Tulsa World analyzed this year’s new crop of laws and determined:
- 411 bills and 20 joint resolutions were passed by both houses of the Legislature and were signed into law by Fallin. The governor vetoed 14 bills and two joint resolutions.
- Republicans – who numerically dominate both the House and the Senate – also dominated in legislative success. Only 42 of the bills and joint resolutions making it into law were written by Democrats. Fallin vetoed one Democratic joint resolution.
- The 101-member state House enacted 235 new laws. The 48 members of the state Senate were responsible for 196.
- House and Senate members introduced 2,557 bills and joint resolutions, so the overall success rate was 16.9 percent.
