Ed Shadid: Worst Week Ever?

Ed Shadid: Worst Week Ever?

by OKC Staff Report

It would be difficult to rank the many bizarre weeks of Councilman Ed Shadid’s campaign to upset incumbent Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett. But there is no question that by every conventional political standard, this was Shadid’s worst week ever, as his campaign was snowed-under by revelations of illegal drug abuse, potential criminal activity, and ongoing efforts by the candidate to cover up the potential criminal activity.

As first reported by The Okie, Ed Shadid admitted publicly to being addicted to the illegal drug marijuana on November 8th. But it wasn’t until this past week that the television media picked up on the story. A KWTV story drawing parallels to Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was followed-up by a KOCO report the next day.

While Councilman Shadid attempted to put his best spin on these damaging reports, the worst was still yet to come.

In a devastating front-page investigative report headlined “Shadid still fighting to keep past secret”, it was revealed that Shadid hired a criminal defense attorney during his divorce, invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, had the record sealed, and is now fighting at the Oklahoma Supreme Court to keep it secret.

The entire Oklahoman report can be read here.

As part of its report, The Oklahoman asked Shadid seven questions that he refused to answer. You can read them all here.

By far, The Okie’s favorite question is this one:

“You have publicly admitted to being in recovery from marijuana addiction so there would be no personal or legal reason to continue exercising your Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination over that and continuing to fight to keep the records related to it secret. So, is it fair for the public to surmise that the reason you will not now open records that are normally public is because they involve potential criminal conduct beyond the use of marijuana?”

The Okie will continue to monitor this fascinating race in Oklahoma City…
