Coburn To Fallin: Resignation, Election Shouldn’t ‘Impose Undue Burden On Taxpayers’
Tom Coburn resignation letter: Thrifty senator kept saving money in mind
From Staff Reports
U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn’s resignation letter holds true to his form as a thrifty public official.
In his letter to Gov. Mary Fallin, dated Jan. 17, Coburn indicated he wanted to give the state an abundance of time to replace him. He expressed concern about the potential cost of a special election to replace him.
Coburn said he hoped the governor “will be able to schedule a special election concurrent with the existing election schedule and not impose any undue burden on Oklahoma taxpayers.”
Fallin has announced that a special election will run concurrently with Oklahoma’s normal election cycle. The filing period for candidates is April 9-11. The primary is June 24. The runoff, if needed, will be Aug. 26. The general election is Nov. 4.
