Coburn report nixes conspiracy theory on ammunition sales

WASHINGTON — Contrary to a popular conspiracy theory of recent years, ammunition purchases by the Department of Homeland Security have declined rather than accelerated during the Obama administration, according to a report released Wednesday by U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn.

The General Accountability Office said DHS ammunition purchases fell from 132.9 million rounds in fiscal year 2009, which included the first nine months of the Obama presidency, to 84.1 million rounds in FY 2013.

The agency expects to buy 75 million rounds during the current fiscal year.

The report comes two years after some sources began asserting DHS was stockpiling up to 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition in an attempt to keep it from falling into the hands of civilians.
