SAND SPRINGS — President Barack Obama’s exchange of five Guantanamo Bay prisoners for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl should have already triggered impeachment proceedings, U.S. Senate candidate Randy Brogdon said Monday.

“The president of the United States violated the law — a blatant violation of the law,” Brogdon said in response to a question at a Sand Springs Chamber of Commerce candidate forum. “I’ve been waiting for someone … any Republican member of the House of Representatives, to file impeachment papers today. That should happen.”

Former Oklahoma Speaker of the House T.W. Shannon, also a candidate in the June 24 GOP primary, was only slightly less harsh in his criticism of the deal to trade the Guantanamo prisoners for Bergdahl, who disappeared in 2009.

“You don’t negotiate with terrorists,” Shannon told the Sand Springs group. “I think our president has put us in harm’s way.

“We’ve seen this kind of incompetence over and over. … You name the scandal, we have an incompetent president, and — let’s be honest — Congress has enabled him.”
