Calvey Interim Proposal Examines ‘Elite Dictators’ At OK Supreme Court
Elite dictators’: Lawmaker wants to study role of state’s high court

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Supreme Court abuses its power, mismanages money and usurps the Legislature’s role, according to an interim study request filed by state Rep. Kevin Calvey.
Criticizing the state’s highest court is nothing new for Calvey, a Republican who represents an area north of Oklahoma City’s Lake Hefner. During an April debate in the House of Representatives, Calvey said that if he wasn’t Christian, he’d douse himself with gasoline outside the court’s building and light himself on fire.
He has requested the hearing to investigate the role of the judiciary and the selection process for justices, which he said is predominately ruled by lawyers instead of voters or their representatives. The approved list of interim studies will not be released until July.
Calvey, an attorney, said the high court’s actions and views are not consistent with voters’ opinions or the state constitution.
