The Democratic candidate for state superintendent told supporters Friday in Tulsa that Oklahoma needs to move toward meaningful testing and preparing more students with workforce skills before they graduate from high school.
John Cox is the longtime superintendent of Peggs, a small public school for students in kindergarten through eighth grade in an unincorporated Cherokee County community. He will face Joy Hofmeister, a Tulsa Republican who left the state Board of Education to run, in the Nov. 4 general election
Speaking at a Tulsa County Democratic Party luncheon, Cox called Hofmeister a “nice person” and even gave her credit for “putting herself out there” to oust unpopular State Superintendent Janet Barresi. But he said Oklahoma Republicans and Democrats alike want a state superintendent with real public education experience.
Asked by an attendee why he isn’t making an issue of Hofmeister’s current lack of education certification from the state, Cox responded that he thought others should be raising the issue.
