Rep. Joe Dorman says Gov. Fallin setting schools, teachers up to fail

Gov. Mary Fallin and the Republican-controlled Legislature are setting Oklahoma schools and educators up to fail, Fallin’s likely Democratic opponent for re-election said Friday in Tulsa.

“Look at how our Legislature and Mary Fallin have treated our education system,” Joe Dorman told the state Postal Workers Union Convention at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

They are “dismantling a lot of the programs that actually allow teachers to do their jobs more efficiently and effectively,” he said.

“We have overcrowded classrooms. We have teachers struggling to make ends meet because of the burden placed on them by state mandates. We’re somewhere between $35 (million) and $50 million short of where we should be with remediation programs to give the kids the tutoring to succeed on these tests.

“Then … we’re going to compare Oklahoma to other states,” he said.
