Oklahoma cities and counties would be in line to receive a $769 million jump in annual revenue if lawmakers approve Gov. Mary Fallin’s proposal to expand Oklahoma’s 4.5-cent sales tax to include an exhaustive list of new services, The Oklahoman has learned.
Doctor visits, legal fees, funeral services, insurance purchases, cable television, utility bills, child care, nursing home services and banking and real estate transactions are just a small sampling of the 164 services that would be newly taxed by the state, cities and counties, according to documents obtained through the state Open Records Act.
Less common services that also would be taxed include tattoos, pet grooming, lawn services, fur storage and taxidermy.
When the governor released her fiscal year 2018 budget Monday, the budget noted that the state could expect to collect an additional $839.7 million for appropriation if lawmakers approve her plan to expand Oklahoma’s 4.5-cent state sales tax to include a lengthy list of services that initially were not specified.
The document didn’t make clear that attaching the state sales tax to those items would automatically result in cities and counties adding their existing sales tax rates to those items, as well.
Fallin is failing, you can’t jyst tax your way out of trouble. Why not propose a plan that would cut Oklahoma government waste 1 dollar for every 1 dollar of tax increase. Just arbitrarily increasing taxes on everything is pure nonsense, What’s next a calculated tax of the amount of air you breathe? Personally I’m 110% fed up with oklahoma complaining about lost revenue, which doesn’t give the state the right to steal money from taxpayers on every conceivable goods or services.
A penny saved is the same as a penny earned but politicians don’t seem to know much about that strategy… Feeling helpless and frustrated with Fallin.
Another 4.5% increase in the cost of going to the doctor? Each office will add that amount to the total of your bill!
No thank you
