Hofmeister Wins Big In Tough Race For Top Ed Spot

After knocking off the incumbent in the Republican primary, Joy Hofmeister turned back her Democratic challenger in Tuesday’s state superintendent race.

With more than 55 percent of the vote, Hofmeister easily outdistanced Peggs Superintendent John Cox for a four-year term leading the state Department of Education.

“We need to keep parents engaged, keep teachers in our state and work with our legislators to address the problem of not having the dollars and resources we need going into the classroom,” Hofmeister said in an interview with the Tulsa World before making her speech to supporters at an Oklahoma City Republican watch party.

“We had four years of dysfunction and it was clear we needed new leadership,” she said. “It is a new day in Oklahoma and I’m ready to lead. It has been a long journey and a competitive race and I recognize we all were in this race working toward a common goal of returning respect to our teachers and achieving real progress.”
