James Lankford tells just about every audience he addresses these days that he is more interested in getting things done than in making speeches.

The implication, intended or not, is that this is what differentiates Oklahoma’s 5th District congressman from his chief rival for the Republican nomination to succeed Tom Coburn in the U.S. Senate.

“My focus is not to try to become a national celebrity,” Lankford told the Tulsa Republican Men’s Club on Wednesday.

“It is much easier to do politics than it is to do policy,” he said. “And there are a lot of people in D.C. (who) full-time do politics. They fund raise every day; they focus on their next campaign.

“They see politics as a sport. I don’t see politics as a sport.”
