McCain: Tom Coburn should be next VA secretary
By: Susan Davis, USA Today
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., wants retiring Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., to serve as the next Veterans Affairs secretary.
McCain first floated his retiring Senate colleague for the job on Friday, after Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned amid an expanding investigation into veterans’ treatment and long wait times at VA medical facilities.
He made the case for Coburn again on Sunday in an appearance on CBS’s Face the Nation.
“I think he’d be the best, and he’s going to kill me for saying that,” McCain quipped. Coburn is a physician and has built a reputation for rooting out inefficiencies in government. McCain praised Coburn to Arizona reporters on Friday as “the greatest reformer in the United States Senate.”
