Elected in 2004, Mayor Mick Cornett has presided over a remarkable period in Oklahoma City’s history. His optimistic leadership has encouraged the full blossoming of a renaissance that has been felt in Oklahoma City’s neighborhoods and its economy.

Cornett has led the charge to build stronger neighborhoods, through unprecedented investments in city street infrastructure and an increase in police officers. Cornett has also promoted policies that have led to tremendous job growth. For much of Cornett’s time in office, the city has enjoyed the lowest unemployment rate in the nation.

Cornett has also led the way to dramatic improvements in quality of life. His vision and leadership is widely credited with making Oklahoma City a “big league city,” through the arrival of a permanent NBA franchise. Like the NBA’s Thunder, Cornett now represents Oklahoma City on the world stage, and is never shy about telling the Oklahoma City story. The implementation of MAPS 3 will also continue to help the City’s residents realize a dream of building a city that their kids and grandkids will want to call home.

Cornett has also been a strong advocate for better education, through his oversight of MAPS for Kids. And Cornett has been a vocal advocate for leading healthier lifestyles, an issue on which he is a national leader. He also has become a national resource on building stronger neighborhoods, and a national spokesman on city issues, through his leadership of the national organization representing Republican mayors and local officials. Cornett has also been a longtime leader in the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and hosted the national meeting for that organization in Oklahoma City in 2010.

Cornett believes in a limited and efficient government that reflects Oklahoma City’s values. The City has not increased its sales tax or property tax rates during Cornett’s tenure as mayor, and at the same time has left a record of achievement that is the envy of the nation. For this, Cornett credits inclusive decision-making, his ability to work with neighborhood leaders and members of the City Council, and the optimism that characterizes “a faith-based city that works hard and dreams big.

Cornett was elected in 2004 with 58 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2006 with 87 percent of the vote, the highest percentage by any mayoral candidate in City history. He was re-elected again in 2010 with 58 percent of the vote. The City of Oklahoma City’s 2012 citizen survey found that over 80 percent of City residents felt that the City was “moving in the right direction.”

The mayoral election will be held March 4, 2014.
