OKLAHOMA CITY — A bill providing for teachers and administrators to carry guns in schools was approved by an Oklahoma House of Representatives committee Wednesday, making it likely to receive a vote on the House floor in coming weeks.
House Bill 1062 by Rep. Mark McCullough, R-Sapulpa, would allow districts to arm teachers and administrators who undergo special training. McCullough was questioned closely by members of the House Public Safety Committee on matters ranging from liability to the possibility of students taking guns away from personnel.
In the end, though, the bill’s do pass motion was approved 13-1 with Rep. Brian Renegar, D-McAlester, the only no vote. The vote essentially means the members of the committee thought the bill should be kept alive, since any other decision would have killed the bill or kept it dormant until the 2014 session.
