Congressman Mullin Votes to Delay
Employer and Individual Mandates of Obamacare
WASHINGTON, D.C.–Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-2) voted today in support of H.R. 2667, the Authority for Mandate Delay Act, and H.R. 2668, the Fairness for American Families Act. H.R. 2667 delays the employer mandate under Obamacare and passed by a vote of 264-161. H.R. 2668 delays the individual mandate under Obamacare and passed by a vote of 251-174.
The President recently went around Congress and announced the delay of the employer mandate of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. Because Obamacare is now law, the President is not authorized to delay any component of the law without Congressional authorization. With the employer mandate delayed, the tax burden to pay for Obamacare would have been placed directly on the backs of taxpayers. Today the House of Representatives properly voted to delay the employer mandate and additionally delay the individual mandate, giving the same relief to individuals and families across the nation the President chose only to give to businesses.
Mullin is a small business owner, and one of only a few members of Congress still actively involved in his business back home. When voting in support of the delays, Mullin said he has experienced first-hand the effects Obamacare has on business.
“Each week we learn of some complication with the implementation of Obamacare,” said Mullin. “This has created great uncertainty among business owners who cannot effectively plan for the future. When the President chose to delay the employer mandate, he chose to confirm that Obamacare is unworkable and unsustainable. And without delaying the individual mandate, the President was allowing those to suffer that he vowed to protect. Individuals deserve the same relief as businesses, and today we voted to make that happen.”
The employer mandate will force “large” employers, those the administration defines with 50 or more employees, to offer health insurance or face penalties from the IRS of approximately $2,000 per employee. This in turn serves as a disincentive for business growth and expansion.
The individual mandate will force hard-working Americans to buy health insurance acceptable to the federal government, or face IRS penalties.
“Now more than ever, it is clear that we must permanently delay Obamacare,” added Mullin.
