Questions Raised About Anonymous Mailer

County officials criticize anonymous mailers opposing jail taxes

By KEVIN CANFIELD World Staff Writer

Mailed fliers opposing Tulsa County’s sales-tax proposal to expand the Tulsa Jail shouldn’t be trusted because they are inaccurate and essentially unsigned, county officials said Friday.

“I don’t know why someone who is opposed to this in Tulsa, they wouldn’t step forward,” said Sheriff Stanley Glanz. “I just didn’t understand where all this money is coming from to send these fliers out. It doesn’t register with me.”

Four mailers paid for by the Heartland Accountability Project began arriving in county residents’ mailboxes a few weeks ago. The organization is incorporated in Glen Allen, Va., according to an online Virginia Corporation Commission business registration page.

The website does not list officers of the company or a phone number.

The mailings are postmarked in Wichita, Kan.

“Why all this out-of-state money?” Glanz asked.
