Report: Oklahoma’s average sales tax rate fifth-highest in nation

By RANDY KREHBIEL World Staff Writer

Oklahoma’s average state and local sales tax rate is the fifth-highest in the nation, according to a report released Tuesday by the Tax Foundation.

The state’s average combined state and local sales tax rate is 8.72 percent, according to the report, higher than any surrounding state except Arkansas.

Arkansas’ rate is 9.19 percent, second nationally only to Tennessee’s 9.45 percent.

Oklahoma has a 4.5 percent state sales tax. Various local entities, mostly municipal and county governments, are also authorized to levy sales taxes.

The Tax Foundation pointed out that its methodology does not take into account states’ sales tax bases — the number of goods and services taxed — and said that can make a substantial difference in the actual sales tax burden.
