SQ 777: Right To Farm Details Coming Into Focus
Cockfighting question surfaces in Oklahoma right-to-farm debate
By Rick Green, NewsOK.com
The contentious issue of cockfighting has emerged in the debate over a proposed ballot measure that is called “Right to Farm” by its supporters and “Right to Harm” by its detractors.
The Legislature referred State Question 777 to the Nov. 8 statewide ballot.
It would create additional constitutional protections for the use of agricultural technology, livestock procedures and ranching practices. Under the proposal, it would take a compelling state interest to interfere with these rights.
However, the measure states that it would not reverse any state statutes or ordinances enacted before Dec. 31, 2014.
