Reasons for secrecy in Blake Shelton-Miranda Lambert divorce revealed

SHAWNEE – A judge has revealed his reasons for letting Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert divorce in secret after being criticized for that decision.
The retiring judge on Tuesday made public his protective order sealing the country music super stars’ divorce records. The case is listed on an online docket sheet as B.T.S. vs. M.L.S., the singers’ initials.
“If the pleadings in this case were made public, it would significantly compromise the personal and financial privacy of the parties,” stated John Gardner, a Pottawatomie County associate district judge.
“There is no legitimate public interest in the personal and financial matters of these parties’ dissolution. These parties are entertainers and are not guardians of the public trust,” Gardner stated. “Because the matters contained in this case are likely to be of significant media interest, but are private in nature and not matters which are of a legitimate public interest, there is a compelling privacy interest which outweighs the public’s interest in the record.”
