Texting Ban Advances In House Committee

Bill to ban texting while driving takes significant first step in Oklahoma Legislature

The Oklahoma Legislature took a significant step Wednesday toward joining 44 other states that prohibit the dangerous practice of texting while driving.

After years of failing to support such bills, there’s a likelihood lawmakers will finally approve a limited ban this year, Rep. Terry O’Donnell said after his measure cleared a legislative committee without opposition and was sent to the House floor. “There are still a lot of people coming to the 21st century on this issue, but I think a lot of my colleagues are now of a like mind,” the Tulsa Republican said.

He said Gov. Mary Fallin’s support for such a ban in her State of the State address also improves its chances.
